Microsoft has set the End-of-Sales (EOS) date for Windows XP to January 31, 2009. Microsoft will continue to provide Extended Support for Windows XP for six more years, until April 2014.

Why move to Windows Vista®? It has great features you are sure to love—it’s more secure, it’s reliable, it’s fun to use, and it makes work easier. If you buy PCs preinstalled with Windows® XP, you should know that Microsoft® will discontinue selling Windows XP on January 31, 2009. However, they will continue to offer Extended Support for six more years, until April 2014. Now is the time to make the transition—once you see you can get more done and have more fun with the latest operating system from Microsoft, Windows Vista, you will be glad you did.

As businesses plan their operating budgets for 2009, this is a good time to think about doing fleet upgrades and taking advantage of Section 179.

Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure
of our thanksgiving.

Don’t say we didn’t warn you! Cyber criminals are earning big bucks to conduct “drive-by download” attacks by selling fake anti-virus software. Computer users typically receive annoying pop-up messages telling them their computer is infected and they can clean their machine by clicking to buy a $49.95 software package called Antivirus XP 2008 or Antivirus XP 2009.

The pop-ups are either delivered through ads on websites or, more commonly, directly to the user's computer if it has been infected with a virus and subsequently recruited as part of a "botnet" of PCs controlled by hackers.

Don’t become victim to this at work or at home. Find out what to look for to protect yourself.

Enjoy the Benefits of Remote Network Monitoring

Two People Connecting Connecting Network Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind -- Enjoy the Benefits of Remote Network Monitoring Without The IT Burden

Your network or application is down and you need it corrected quickly or your business suffers through loss of productivity, revenue or image. With managed services from Applied Tech corrective action is already underway to get you up and running again.

Today’s remote network monitoring applications — such as Cisco Works, HP OpenView, Ipswitch and Netarx — can help us generate valuable information about your network health and performance. This data, pulled from firewall and VPN logs, helps our network administrators quickly determine which of your network components are overburdened, underutilized or at risk.

And by hiring out this service, you can gain all the information you need to make critical decisions, without placing an additional burden on your busy IT personnel.

If you are an SMB with numerous PCs, servers and a Web site — but a small IT staff — remote network monitoring may prove to be an ideal solution. Here’s why:

 Did You Know?

Did you know that you can turn off email notifications in Outlook? Desktop Alerts are turned on by default. There might be times when you want to turn Desktop Alerts off and then on again. For example, if you are making a presentation to a public audience, you might not want Desktop Alerts to appear on your screen, revealing information that you prefer to keep private. Although Microsoft Office Outlook will not display Desktop Alerts when you are running a Microsoft Office PowerPoint presentation, the display of alerts will resume if you switch to another program or a Web site during your presentation.
