 Did You Know. . .

ieSpell is a free Internet Explorer browser extension that spell-checks text-input boxes on a Web page. It should come in particularly handy for users who do a lot of Web-based text entry (Web mail, forums, blogs, diaries). Even if your Web application already includes spell-checking functionality, this utility is faster than a server-side solution. Plus, you get to store and use your personal word list across all your applications instead of having to maintain separate ones on each application. More info!

Old Confused Grandpa asks: “I’ve been enjoying your ideas for “Green IT”, and thought of a question. I have all this old computer equipment, including CRT monitors to get rid of. Now I hear that all this stuff has to be “recycled” and that it’s going to cost me some of my hard-earned money. What does this mean? Why do I have to pay, and how much is it going to cost? What is the world coming to? I just don’t get it. Heck, I can’t even donate this stuff anymore!

At an open house event on July 29, 2008, Applied Tech and sponsors announced a Green IT Makeover contest for Wisconsin-based businesses. Businesses are encouraged to apply for a chance to win environmentally-friendly products and services from Applied Tech, Focus on Energy, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, WatchGuard and others. The Grand Prize Package is valued at over $25,000.

With increased interest in purchasing environmentally-friendly products, recycling, and reducing energy use, drive times and CO2 emissions, Applied Tech and their partners will help a local business adopt 'green' IT practices and improve energy efficiency at their facility. The winner can look forward to utilizing terminal services, a feature that allows a user to access applications and data on a remote computer over a network. A savings of 71 miles can prevent 63 pounds of CO2 emissions being released into the atmosphere.

"Focus on Energy, Wisconsin's energy efficiency and renewable energy initiative, is excited to partner with Applied Tech on their Green IT Makeover contest," said Ken Williams, business programs director for Focus on Energy. "This joint effort will help a local business reduce energy use, improve efficiency of their business and ultimately improve their bottom line."

Eligible applicants must be Wisconsin-based with a minimum of ten employees and ten computers. Applications must be received by October 17, 2008 and the winner will be notified by the end of November. For more information and to download an application, please visit Applied Tech's Web site at www.appliedtech.us/GreenIT.

July’s Open House was a success!

Thanks to all the 130+ folks that joined us on the warm (okay. . . hot!) July day for Applied Tech’s Open House featuring the 42-foot Microsoft Across America Truck.

Erik Kakulis, an Energy Advisor with Focus on Energy, joined Julie Vike of Applied Tech in announcing the Green IT Makeover Contest sponsored by Applied Tech, Focus on Energy, and the Capital Region Business Journal. Guests received first-hand information on the contest and were given the first opportunity of entering to win over $25,000 of eco-friendly IT equipment and services.

Tours of the Applied Tech’s unique office space were given to reveal the repurposed materials used to create our office space. Guests also enjoyed the air-conditioned Microsoft truck where they could demo the latest and greatest in technology gadgets and software.

To beat the heat, chocolate sundaes were provided, courtesy of Schoep’s Ice Cream. Guest were also able to meet the MPower Madison “M” and learn more about energy conservation and other ways to contribute to a healthy community to live, work and play!

Productivity Calling
VoIP Can Dial In Rewards for Your Growing Business

Your company's IP network already enables your employees to use the internet, e-mail and web resources on the job. But did you know the very same technology can help your company save money -- by transmitting phone calls through voice data in packets using IP rather than a traditional phone line?

If your company is like many SMBs, you're on a fast track of growth but want to keep your business expenses from running amuck. One way to achieve both goals is through a robust technology called Voice over IP (VoIP).

This technology was once touted as a solution of the future, and today is already proving its worth for many SMBs seeking to prepare for the future.

What exactly is VoIP?

If all the cars in the United States were placed end to end, it would probably be called Labor Day Weekend.
