Lookout
With a New
Year comes the resolution to be more organized and if
this is your resolution for your company, look no
further than “Lookout” for Microsoft Outlook.
This add in
allows for lightning-fast search within your e-mail,
contacts, calendar, and file system. In addition,
Lookout can search for items in Personal Folders Files
(.pst), your Microsoft Exchange Server e-mail account,
and public folders as well as search multiple .pst files
simultaneously.
Lookout is
the only personal search engine that can search all of
your e-mail from directly within Outlook. All you have
to do is type in a search term, hit enter, and a list of
results will appear locating the term hidden in any
subject lines, the body text of e-mails, phone numbers,
and addresses.
Not only
does Lookout allow you to have quick searches within
email, but in your calendar and shared calendars as
well.

Recycling
E-Waste
Your company can do more to cut down on harmful
toxins.
By Matthew D. Sarrel
These days,
responsible computing means more than not spreading
viruses and not hacking into someone else’s system. The
waste that results from disposing of electronics such as
computers and mobile phones, called e-waste, can be
highly toxic. The United Nations Environmental Program
estimates that, each year, 20 million to 50 million tons
of e-waste is dumped into landfills around the world.
That works out to about 4,000 tons per hour.
Almost every component
is built with some kind of toxin. Computer circuit boards hold lead
and cadmium. Monitors’ cathode-ray tubes have lead, cadmium,
phosphorus, and barium. In fact, a large CRT may contain as much as
4 to 8 pounds of lead. Even cables are bad for the environment, as
they are sprayed with brominated flame retardants. Such chemicals
can leach into the soil and groundwater.

Planning
for a Quick Recovery
Learn about what you can
do to quickly and effectively recover your business' systems in the
event of a disruption.
For most small and
mid-sized businesses, computing systems and electronic information
are necessary to conduct business on a daily basis. You shouldn't
have to think about disasters causing you to lose valuable resources
and data, but the reality is that the risk of unforeseen
circumstances and disruptions to IT systems is always present. If
your IT systems go down, it's not only inconvenient, it could cost
your business a substantial amount of money. A study by Forrester
Research estimated that the average cost of downtime for an
e-commerce site is $8,000 per hour.

Facing
E-Discovery
Learn about e-discovery and the changes to the Federal Rules of
Civil Procedure going into effect on December 1, 2006, and what you
can do to make your business compliant.
The increase of
electronic information has led to a new era in legal proceedings
whereby courts can now mandate searches of digital data for
evidence. This process is known as e-discovery, short for electronic
discovery. E-discovery can include searching data on a single
computer as well as on a network.

Microsoft Small Business Center
Most people don't use
every feature built-in with their software applications. We tend to
pinpoint those we find helpful and call it a day. Here are five features
within Microsoft Word, the word-processing software in Microsoft
Office, that I use in my business to save time and money.
1.Create and design
your company's letterhead, choosing from an array of free clip art
from Microsoft.
2.Send the same
letter to many people without addressing each separately.
3.Add a watermark to a
document so everyone knows that it is a draft.
4.Keep an eye on
changes that people are making to documents.
5.Use a shortcut for
many of your tasks.
