Windows Vista is Microsoft’s most energy-efficient operating system to date. In fact, for every 10 PCs that switch to Windows Vista is the equivalent of taking an automobile off the road in terms of greenhouse gas! (source: Microsoft Vista Energy Conservation).

Employee Profile - Doug Orlofske

Doug joined Applied Tech in April 2008 as a Senior Systems Engineer. Prior to Applied Tech, Doug worked for Wisconsin Public Power as the System & Security Manager. The laundry-list of certifications that Doug has achieved includes the MCSE 2000 & 2003, Cisco CCNA, RedHat Certified Technician (RHCT), ITIL Foundations, and the Citrix CCA (Citrix Certified Administrator), and, according to Doug, he is continually looking to add to this collection of achievements and has no signs of slowing down.

Doug and his wife, Leslie, have two children: 2 boys: Ryan (8) and Jesse (6). While the boys keep them busy, Doug also enjoys movies, fishing, bicycling, camping and doing projects around the home, including the honey-do list.

Doug Orlofske
Senior Network Engineer

Doug’s favorite TV shows include: Deadliest Catch, House, The Colbert Report, Monk, The Soup and the Boomerang Cartoon Network (for the kids, or so he says. . . heh, heh. . . ).

An interested tidbit about Doug is that he was one of the first classes of students to enroll in the Geological Engineering Program at the UW-Madison. Doug earned his B.S. in Geological Engineering which is fully accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering & Technology.

We are very fortunate that Doug is part of the Applied Tech Team. Please help in welcoming Doug!

Congratulations to Cory Rammer!

It’s been a busy month for Cory. Not only did he pass yet another test towards his Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer certification, he and his wife, Nichole, welcomed their first child, Abby, on Monday, May 19, 2008.

Business Interruption Planning Not Just for Big Business:
10 misconceptions about disaster recovery

Paul Sullivan has seen it all. A 25-year veteran of disaster recovery and business continuity management, Sullivan witnessed the growth of continuity planning among the Fortune 1000 in the 1980s. He watched, first hand, the successes and failures of business continuity plans following the events of September 11, 2001 and in 2005 throughout the most active hurricane season in recorded history. Today, Sullivan is helping small and medium-sized companies plan for and recover after significant business interruptions.

“Continuity planning has always been associated with big business,” said Sullivan, Vice President and General Manager, Agility Recovery Solutions. “We’re using the same knowledge, strategies and tactics we developed with the Fortune 1000 and implementing them among small and medium-sized businesses across North America.”

Agility Recovery Solutions, a former division of General Electric, focuses planning and recovery efforts on small and medium-sized businesses, though the company continues to do work with giants such as IBM and HP.

Why Business Continuity? Why now?

In the News. . .
by Julie Vike

This month’s “In the News” isn’t necessarily a news update, news flash or news bulletin. But it is enjoyable! In light of this being summer vacation for kids, I thought parents, grandparent and concerned persons might enjoy this article Some Rules Kids Won’t Learn in School. It was written by Charles J. Sykes, best known as the author of "Dumbing Down Our Kids: Why American Children Feel Good about Themselves, but Can’t Read, Write, or Add." Drastically edited by person(s) unknown, it began making the email rounds under Bill Gates' name in February 2000 and is still far more often attributed to Gates than to Sykes — which is unfortunate, but, like the man said: Life isn't fair; get used to it.
