Crash Course in Security Risks

There's no such thing as a business too small to worry about information security; moreover, if you're big enough to network two computers and connect them to the Internet, you're big enough to have to think about protecting the network as well as the individual computers.

Until recently, this meant placing a small firewall appliance at the network gateway, but as security hardware vendors push increasingly sophisticated functionality into their entry-level devices, small businesses and their solution providers have increasingly turned to unified threat management appliances.

A UTM appliance is a stand-alone network device that combines a variety of different security-related functionality in a single piece of hardware. They are typically based upon a firewall platform; other functionality varies, but commonly includes spam filtering, gateway antivirus protection, intrusion detection or prevention, Web content filtering, a VPN gateway, and remote access tools.

MABA nominates Applied Tech's Julie Vike
for Board of Directors position.
We are pleased to announce that Julie Vike has been nominated by the Madison Area Builders Association to run for an open seat on Board of Directors panel.

Since 1999, Julie has been involved with the Madison Area Builders Association; first as a committee member, then as a volunteer for various events and sub-committees and most recently, as Chair of the Programs Committee in 2006 and 2007. During Julie's committee involvement with MABA, two of the most notable successes include the inception of "Beer, Brats and Builders" and "Builders After Hours events.

Julie Vike
Marketing/Business
Development Manager

The "Beer, Brats and Builders" (now into its 5th year) has proven to be a financially responsible function for MABA. The "Builders After Hours" event, started by the committee of which Julie chairs, was created to open more opportunities for member to network and to give members an increased ability to showcase their products or services.

"My dedication to MABA has never stopped outside the meeting room. I thrive on getting involved and in making a difference. It is this rationale that explains why I am hopeful for this opportunity to serve on the Board. I am energized to expand my involvement to MABA and its members, and to foster the organization's overall mission.”

If you are a member of the Madison Area Builders Association, please keep your eyes out for the nomination ballet that will be arriving early October. Good luck, Julie!

Seeing Double Increases Productivity
By Jane Cage, HTS COO

Do you have the luxury of doing only one task at a time? If you’re like me, I would guess the answer is probably “No”. I find myself answering email, working on a spreadsheet, looking at an accounting issue and searching for info on the internet all at the same time. It’s just become part of the way that we all work. Most computer users, however, are forced into single-tasking because of the way they see their work – on a single monitor. Windows XP and VISTA provide desktop users with the ability to “spread” their desktop across multiple monitors. Having two monitors has changed and improved the way I work. I’ve seen several study results that state two monitors can improve productivity from 20-50%. I agree. I can cut and paste from one application to another without having to change applications on screen. I can look at the info that I need on the internet and type that information directly into a spreadsheet at the same time.   Read more
