Sex scandal email spam targeting US Presidential Election - We have been alerted that there is an email spam campaign which uses the US presidential election as a social engineering mechanism to install malicious software on your PC. Emails are circulating with fake news of a sex scandal affecting one of the candidates. Recipients of the email are encouraged to view a video supposedly involving one of the candidates. Users who click the link are shown a pornographic video. While the video plays for 14 seconds, malicious applications are installed on the person's PC.

What makes this extra dangerous is that today Microsoft will be announcing a patch for a vulnerability in media player. So if you click on the link the attacker can potentially take advantage of an existing vulnerability that you are not protected against.

Attackers often use major events such as the Olympics, elections, disasters to try to catch people off guard and encourage them to click on links to download hostile software. Once they have control of your PC they can steal your personally identifiable information to get access to your critical accounts or commit ID theft. The link may look like you are going to USAToday.com but in reality the link takes you to a hostile site that just looks like USAToday. For the example above if you wanted to verify if there was a sex scandal going on you should go directly to USAToday, CNN or MSNBC (for example) by typing CNN.com directly in your browser. If there was a sex scandal involving one of the candidates it will be posted on the major news sites.

Applied Tech and its sponsors announced a Green IT Makeover contest for Wisconsin-based businesses. Businesses are encouraged to apply for a chance to win environmentally-friendly products and services from Applied Tech, Focus on Energy, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, WatchGuard and others. The Grand Prize Package is valued at over $25,000.

With increased interest in purchasing environmentally-friendly products, recycling, and reducing energy use, drive times and CO2 emissions, Applied Tech and their partners will help a local business adopt 'green' IT practices and improve energy efficiency at their facility. The winner can look forward to utilizing terminal services, a feature that allows a user to access applications and data on a remote computer over a network. A savings of 71 miles can prevent 63 pounds of CO2 emissions being released into the atmosphere.

"Focus on Energy, Wisconsin's energy efficiency and renewable energy initiative, is excited to partner with Applied Tech on their Green IT Makeover contest," said Ken Williams, business programs director for Focus on Energy. "This joint effort will help a local business reduce energy use, improve efficiency of their business and ultimately improve their bottom line."

Eligible applicants must be Wisconsin-based with a minimum of ten employees and ten computers. Applications must be received by October 17, 2008 and the winner will be notified by the end of November. For more information, including official rules and conditions, and to download an application, visit Applied Tech's Web site at www.appliedtech.us/GreenIT.

Every year, hundreds of natural disasters – ranging from blizzards and wildfires to hurricanes, tornadoes and flooding – wreak havoc on families, businesses and entire communities across America. However, the vast majority of “disasters” are everyday events that can have a crippling effect on your business: a faulty server, a broker water pipe, cut phone lines, long-term power outages. Oftentimes, people are reminded to take action and prepare before these events happen, but sometimes they occur without warning.

Agility Recovery Solutions, an endorsed partner of Applied Tech, is taking part in National Preparedness Month, a nationwide initiative sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security, to encourage individuals and businesses to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies.

The goal of National Preparedness Month is to increase public awareness about the importance of preparation and encourage individuals and businesses to take action. Applied Tech invites all to join this effort.

Agility is sponsoring free Webinars every Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. CST during September to help businesses prepare for any emergency. Click on the links below to register:
