Spam Getting Worse
Prevent Laptop Theft

Plain and Simple - Spam is getting worse. Read this!

If it seems like there's more spam in recent months than ever before, it's because there is. More spam is being generated, and more spam is making it past some spam filters than ever before.

Why the upswing? Well, there are two theories, both of which make sense.

First is an increase in the use of zombie networks or "botnets" to actually send spam. Zombie networks are simply machines owned by average users like you and me, which have been infected with Malware that can be secretly instructed to send spam. Since the spam is sent from thousands, if not millions, of different machines spread all over the world, there's no reasonable way to block it.

Five Ways to Prevent Your Laptop from
Being Stolen

When your laptop gets stolen, you lose a lot more than your computer and the cost of the replacement. Take these simple steps to protect it.

DON'T let your computer out of your sight, even for a moment. Wi-Fi hotspots like coffee shops can be distracting and are prime hangouts for laptop thieves. Don't leave it on a table to get a refill and don't put it on the floor behind your chair.

How Did Google Get Its Name?

It's an odd word, google. And it's taken up permanent residence in the lexicon as not only a product name for a search engine but also in verb form—to google. Why was Google chosen? According to the company's web site, the term was originally coined by Milton Sirotta, a mathematician. It meant "1 followed by 100 zeros"—in other words, an extremely large number. The originators of Google saw the term as relevant to their mission, which was and remains "to organize the immense amount of information" that exists in the world.

Barnacleware
by Mark D. MacLachlan, itSynergy

Keeping up to date with security patches for non Microsoft applications can be a daunting task. Redmond Security Watch author Russ Cooper recently referred to applications that come pre-installed on new computers as barnacleware. The name is apropos, these pre-installed utilities cling to new PCs slowly eating away at resources (both hard disk and memory) in the same manner that barnacles cling to a ship's hull, slowing it down and slowly eating the hull.

The Weakest Link in Network Security
By Peter Alexander
Reprinted with permission from Microsoft Small Business Center

Your small-business network may be protected by firewalls, intrusion detection and other state-of-the-art security technologies. And yet, all it takes is one person's carelessness, and suddenly it's as if you have no network security at all.

Let me give you an example.

In March 2006, a major financial services firm with extensive network security disclosed that one of its portable computers was stolen. The laptop contained the Social Security numbers of nearly 200,000 people. How did it happen? An employee of the firm, dining in a restaurant with colleagues, had locked the laptop in the trunk of a SUV. During dinner, one of the employee's colleagues retrieved an item from the vehicle and forgot to re-lock it. As fate would have it, there was a rash of car thefts occurring in that particular area at that particular time, and the rest is history.
